In 2020 The Elders were awarded DLRCOCO’s community grant to delve into the life and work of playwright Teresa Deevy. Over ten weeks of online sessions we read the plays, researched her life and had talks with Dr Cathy Leeney and director Caroline Byrne. During this process we became interested in creating a piece about Deevy in the future.
In 2023 with the kind support of Create’s Artist in the Community Grant we developed an idea for a play in which Teresa Deevy meets her own female characters. These women are strong, not always likeable but always fascinating and we were interested in what they might have to say to Teresa and vice versa.
Michelle Read was guest facilitator on this project and worked with The Elders on writing dialogue and creating characters. At the end of the year we presented a work in progress showing to a small audience in dlr Mill Maureen O’Hara studio of a selection of scenes in which Teresa holds a dinner party attended by her characters and other important people in her life.
